To whom thus Adam <\/em>fervently repli’d.
\nO Woman, best are all things as the will
\nOf God ordain’d them<\/strong><\/a>, his creating hand
\nNothing imperfet or deficient left\u00a0 [345]
\nOf all that he Created, much less Man,
\nOr aught that might his happy State secure,
\nSecure from the outward force; within himself
\nThe danger lies, yet lies within his power:
\nAgainst his will he can receive no harm.<\/strong><\/em><\/a>\u00a0 [350]
\nBut God left free the Will, for what obeys
\nReason, is free, and Reason he made right,
\nBut bid her well beware, and still erect,
\nLest by some fair appearing good surpris’d
\nShe dictate false, and misinform the Will\u00a0 [355]
\nTo do what God expressly hath forbid.
\nNot then mistrust, but tender love enjoins,
\nThat I should mind thee oft, and mind thou me.
\n Firm we subsist, yet possible to swerve,<\/strong><\/a>
\nSince Reason not impossibly may meet\u00a0 [360]
\nSome specious object by the Foe suborn’d,
\nAnd fall into deception unaware,
\nNot keeping strictest watch, as she was warn’d.
\nSeek not temptation then, which to avoid
\nWere better, and most likely if from mee\u00a0 [365]
\nThou sever not: Trial will come unsought.
\nWouldst thou approve thy constancy, approve
\nFirst thy obedience; th’other who can know,
\nNot seeing thee attempted, who attest?
\nBut if thou think, trial unsought may find\u00a0 [370]
\nUs both securer than thus warn’d thou seem’st,
\nGo; for thy stay, not free, absents thee more;
\nGo in thy native innocence<\/strong><\/a>, rely
