… Ay me, they little know
\nHow dearly I abide that boast so vain,
\nUnder what torments inwardly I groan:<\/strong>
\nWhile they adore me on the Throne of Hell,
\nWith Diadem and Sceptre high advanc’d [90]
\nThe lower still I fall<\/strong>, only Supreme
\nin misery; such joy Ambition finds.<\/strong><\/a>
\nBut say I could repent and could obtain
\nBy Act of Grace my former state; how soon
\nWould highth recall high thoughts, how soon unsay [95]
\nWhat feign’d submission swore: ease would recant
\nVows made in pain, as violent and void.<\/strong>
\nFor never can true reconcilement grow
\nWhere wounds of deadly hate have pierc’d so deep:<\/strong><\/a>
\nWhich would but lead me to a worse relapse, [100]
\nAnd heavier fall: so should I purchase dear
\nShort intermission bought with double smart.<\/strong>
\nThis knows my punisher; therefore as far
\nFrom granting hee, as I from begging peace:
\nAll hope excluded thus, behold instead [105]
\nOf us out-cast, exil’d, his new delight,
\nMankind created, and for him this World.<\/strong>
\nSo farewell Hope, and with Hope farewell Fear,
\nFarewell Remorse: all Good to me is lost;
\nEvil be thou my Good<\/strong>; by thee at least [110]
\nDivided Empire with Heav’n’s King I hold
\nBy thee, and more than half perhaps will reign;<\/strong>
