\nThir dread commander<\/strong>: he above the rest
\nIn shape and gesture proudly eminent [590]<\/strong>
\nStood like a Tow’r;<\/strong> <\/strong>his form had yet not lost
\nAll her Original brightness<\/strong>, <\/strong><\/strong>nor appear’d
\nLess than Arch-Angel ruin’d, and th’ excess
\nOf Glory obscur’d: As when the Sun new ris’n
\nLooks through the Horizontal misty Air, [595]
\nShorn of his Beams, or from behind the Moon
\nIn dim Eclipse disastrous twilight sheds
\nOn half the Nations, and with fear of change
\nPerplexes Monarchs. Dark’n’d so, yet shone
\nAbove them all th’ Arch-Angel: <\/strong><\/strong>but his face [600]
\nDeep scars of Thunder had intrencht, and care<\/strong>
\n Sat on his faded cheek<\/strong>, but under Brows
\nOf dauntless courage, <\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/a>and considerate Pride
\nWaiting revenge: cruel his eye, but cast<\/strong>
\nSigns of remorse and passion <\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/a>to behold [605]
\nThe fellows of his crime, the followers rather
\n(Far other once beheld in bliss) condemn’d
\nFor ever now to have thir lot in pain,
\nMillions of Spirits for his fault amerc’t
\nOf Heav’n, and from Eternal Splendors flung [610]
\nFor his revolt, yet faithful how they stood,
\nThir Glory wither’d. As when Heaven’s Fire
\nHath scath’d the Forest Oaks, or Mountain Pines,
\nWith singed top thir stately growth though bare
\nStands on the blasted Heath. He now prepar’d [615]
\nTo speak; whereat thir doubl’d Ranks they bend
\nFrom wing to wing, and half enclose him round
\nWith all his Peers: attention held them mute.
\nThrice he assay’d, and thrice in spite of scorn,
\nTears such as Angels weep, burst forth:<\/strong> <\/strong><\/strong>at last [620]
